A magic song from a magic voice lyrics Strange Fruit Southern trees bear strange fruit Blood on the leaves and blood at the root Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees Pastoral scene of the gallant south The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh Then the sudden smell of burning flesh Here is fruit for the crows to pluck For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop Here is a strange and bitter crop
Billie sings with her heart. Lyrics (Abel Meeropol): Southern trees bear strange fruit, Blood on the leaves and blood at the root, Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze, Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees. Pastoral scene of the gallant south, The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth, Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh, Then the sudden smell of burning flesh. Here is fruit for the crows to pluck, For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck, For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop, Here is a strange and bitter crop.

While on board, you can select a volume from the vast collection in the Mark Twain Gallery, the boat’s library. Or enjoy a sing-along in the Main Deck Lounge, and then tap your toes to a lavish show in the two-deck-tall Grand Saloon, the most elegant showplace on the river. In this special edition of Mississippi Roads, we take a look at how the state celebrates the Holidays in different ways. In Madison, you're guaranteed to see ice from mid-November to the beginning of January at Christmas on Ice. A man in Natchez has worked tirelessly to restore and recreate animated decorations that have been cherished in the community for decades. Some villages in Mississippi celebrate the holidays all year long! Beauvoir on the coast mixes old traditions with new ones in time for the Holidays. Plus, great music from a few performances at Christmas on Ice. Learn more at http://www.mpbonline.org
The Downtown Development District of New Orleans partners with Riverwalk Marketplace mall to host two special nights of outdoor holiday movies on the Mississippi River for several hundred guests as part of the annual Canal Street: Home for the Holidays celebration. This event began in 2010 with just one movie night. The event was so popular, had such low costs and light logistics requirements that it was quickly decided that two nights were needed! Hot chocolate and other tasty treats are available, Santa pays a visit and the DDD gives out 100 Canal Street: Home for the Holidays fleece blankets.
We take a behind-the-scenes look at Festival of Trees, one of the kick-off events to the holiday season in the Quad Cities. Festival of Trees includes hundreds of themed Christmas trees, wreaths, door decorations, holiday rooms, gingerbread houses, and more. Also explore the North Pole, visit with Santa, and bring your kids to the many childrens' activities. This year's festival runs November 23 - December 1, 2013. Learn more about how this incredible event comes together! We interview Cindi Johnston, this year's Festival of Trees co-director, and Carolyn Fuller, a veteran tree designer - and get all their great secrets. Finally, we were so inspired by the annual Gingerbread Village that we decided to try and build our very own gingerbread ale house - with decidedly mixed results.
